Chapter 10

A Chair for My Mother is by Vera B. Williams he is the author and illustrator. This book is about a family that lost all of their furniture in a house fire. The family members decide to save coins to buy a new chair for their home. The mother is a waitress and tries to save all of the money she can to help out the family. The mother and daughter take all of the money they save it in a jar. When the jar is full they go out and buy a beautiful chair for the family to enjoy. The illustrations are very beautiful with a painted appearance and show exactly what is going on in the text. Each page has an inventive and vibrant border on it that pertains to what is happening on that particular page. This is a Caldecott Honor Book that teaches a valuable lesson on how hard times can always be worked through and that working hard and giving 110% will always make a difference.
I read this book and I think this book is very appropriate due to all the things going wrong with America and its values towards buy now and pay later ! It tells young children that good things come to those who wait, and even when you are down things will improve if you patient and wait it out! It tells a young child that working for a dream and thinking of something is as important and thrilling as immediate gratification !

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie is by Laura Joffe Numeroff and illustrated by Felicia Bond. “Who would ever suspect that a tiny little mouse could wear out an energetic young boy? Well, if you're going to go around giving an exuberantly bossy rodent a cookie, you'd best be prepared to do one or two more favors for it before your day is through. For example, he'll certainly need a glass of milk to wash down that cookie, won't he? And you can't expect him to drink the milk without a straw, can you? Laura Joffe Numeroff's tale of warped logic is a sure-fire winner in the giggle-generator category. But concerned parents can rest assured, there's even a little education thrown in for good measure: underneath the folly rest valuable lessons about cause and effect. Felicia Bond's hilarious pictures are full of subtle, fun details. The dynamic author and illustrator pair teamed up again for If You Give a Moose a Muffin and If You Give a Pig a Pancake. Who doesn't love this book? effect.

Chapter 10
In chapter 10 I learn about Reading Aloud: Bringing Literature Alive for All Ages. I learn a quote by William Sleator, "Reading aloud is a great way to get kids into books—I remember absolutely loving it when the teacher read aloud when I was a kid. I was completely lost in the story." I learn as future teacher why reading aloud is essential because it "the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children." From Becoming a Nation of Readers, p. 23 I learn how effective read aloud is to students they increasing interest in reading, language development, building vocabulary and listening comprehension. For my field-based class I need to do a read aloud and learning about this chapter, I was able to have a successful read aloud.
